LIGHTSPEED DESIGN, INC. RECEIVES KEY U.S. PATENT FOR 3D SINGLE-CHIP PROJECTOR COLOR SEQUENCING

BELLEVUE, WA – January 10, 2012: Lightspeed Design, Inc. / DepthQ® is pleased to announce its receipt of U.S Patent No. 8,066,377 for inventing a color sequencing control method that allows 3D single-chip projectors to effectively produce high-performance displays with eye switching devices (LCD active glasses and polarization modulators) by resolving color artifacts and efficiently covering crosstalk (ghosting).

This new invention not only solved image quality problems, it accomplished that while utilizing the standard, off-the-shelf hardware configuration of single-chip 2D projectors. This allowed single-chip 2D projectors to operate either in 2D or in stereoscopic 3D, thereby creating a practical, cost effective 3D product. The application of this invention paved the way for the now industry-wide standard of “3D Ready”.

The novel control method designates a particular segment (or partial segments) of the existing color wheel as “non-critical” to the projection and uses this virtual opaque element to create dark time by discontinuing light output with control firmware. Creating strategically-placed dark time with this new method allows the eye switching device to completely change its state from one eye to the other between projected image frames (in the dark) effectively mitigating the color artifact and crosstalk issues. In a sample DepthQ® sequence, the designated non-critical color is the White segment of the color wheel. A custom designed control sequence is engaged which reorders the colors when necessary and discontinues the light output during some or all of the White segment's allotted display duration.

In 2005, Lightspeed’s pioneering development efforts delivered the world’s first portable 120Hz stereoscopic 3D, single-chip projector to the public. This first-to-market model was 800x600 resolution - while the second and current models, the DepthQ® WXGA and DepthQ® HDs3D-1, increased the resolution to 1280x720. DepthQ® projectors synchronize up to 120 fps input for true 60 fps per eye, creating very high-quality 3D at modest prices, removing the economic barrier to broad use of 3D projection.

The Da-Lite® 3D Mash-up video is a 4 ½ minute high energy, quick cut visual feast of stereoscopic artistry and innovative spirit set to a driving beat. LIGHTSPEED / DEPTHQ® PRODUCES 3D AQUARIUM FOR BLU-RAY TO BE RELEASED JUNE 7, 2011

Lightspeed Design, Inc. completed filming, post production and delivery of a series of 3D Aquariums to be released on 3D Blu-ray by Topics Entertainment on June 7, 2011. The 3D Blu-ray will be initially available at Best Buy, Fry's, Sony Style and on Amazon.com (http://amzn.to/3DAquarium) with Sam's Club and wider distribution later in the summer.

Six different salt water reef tanks with over 220 different species of fish, anemones, clams, crab, shrimp and corals were filmed using the DepthQ® Stereoscopic 3D rig outfitted with two RED ONE 4K digital cinema cameras and captured & mastered at 4096x2304 resolution to create the 6 different chapters. Crystal clear, ultra sharp imagery combined with deep, comfortable 3D and 3 different 5.1 HD Audio soundtracks create an incredibly immersive experience that is beautiful, compelling and fun.

LIGHTSPEED DESIGN / DEPTHQ® TRANSFORMS SHOWTIME® ANIMATED LOGO FROM 2D TO 3D

Showtime® tapped Lightspeed Design, Inc. to transform their animated logo from 2D to 3D for a post Superbowl DirectTV event. The project schedule was a little less than 2 weeks making this a truly remarkable feat. The original 2D After Effects CS4 primary composition for the 7 second animation used 245 layers, 6 pre-compositions and 59 pre-rendered elements, each of which received Lightspeed's individually-tailored 2D to 3D conversion techniques. Lightspeed's primary 2D to 3D After Effects CS5 composition utilized 478 layers, 103 pre-compositions, and 32 pre-rendered elements to create the final stereoscopic 3D composite.

Even a blizzard in New York near the end of the project, causing over 2000 flights to be canceled including Lightspeed's expedited UPS shipment, did not prevent their on-time, on-budget delivery of the product. Showtime was so pleased with the spectacular 3D, they asked Lightspeed to lengthen the logo sequence to 14 seconds and add a custom 5.1 surround sound mix.

What Source is Required for Nationwide's

3-D Technology?

Mirage HD18K (options):

Requires a computer with 3-D Stereoscopic graphics card capable of displaying OpenGL or DirectX quad buffered stereo 3-D content. This must be fed to the projector through a single, Single-Link DVI input. The content must be rendered frame sequentially at 1920x1080P at 60Hz. The content is then frame-doubled internally through the projector. The RGB input can also be used.
A video server may also be used provided it can supply the required 1920X108P at 60Hz through a frame sequential signal.

Mirage WU12K-M (options):

Requires a computer with 3-D Stereoscopic graphics card capable of displaying a progressive scan of OpenGL or DirectX quad buffered stereo 3-D content.
This projector can accept the stereoscopic content through the following inputs via HDMI, DVI or HD-SDI.
- Two signals at 60Hz (Left & Right). OR
- Single input, frame sequential at 120Hz. OR
- Two signals at 30Hz (Left & Right) frame-doubled by the projector. OR
- Single input at 60Hz (30Hz per eye) frame-doubled by the projector.

HEATHER RAIKES' "CORPUS CORVUS", A STEREOSCOPIC 3D DANCE PERFORMANCE, SUPPORTED BY DEPTHQ®

Heather Raikes' latest project titled "Corpus Corvus" premiered February 5th, 2011 at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center with 3D support by DepthQ® Stereoscopic. The production is a mixed reality performance and derivative stereoscopic cinema artwork that explores contemporary mythos through immersive media technologies.

Heather Raikes is a physical/media artist.

Corpus Corvus utilizes stereoscopic 3D projection, motion capture animation, an integrated physical/media choreographic vocabulary, and electroacoustic composition to explore the Pacific Northwest Native American myth of the raven as god and thief who steals the sun and creates the universe. Raikes is currently completing her PhD at DXARTS, the University of Washington’s Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media.

LIGHTSPEED FILMS JACK DANIEL'S DISTILLERY IN DEPTHQ® STEREOSCOPIC

Lightspeed Design, Inc. was tapped by Gali-3D (Producer) to film the Jack Daniel's distillery in stereoscopic HD-3D for a European event marketing campaign designed by the international ad agency Arnold Worldwide in cooperation with Arnold Prague public relations company.

Lightspeed filmed the distillery, located in Lynchburg, TN., in DepthQ® Stereoscopic over four days in April 2010 capturing the step by step, time-honored traditional process of creating Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey. The raw footage was delivered to Gali-3D for post production and editing. The final event marketing piece will be shown at music festivals across Europe in a small, portable 3D theatre using the DepthQ® Polarization Modulator and passive polarized 3D glasses.

The new DepthQ® Polarization Modulator electronically switches the polarization orientation of light passing through it. In combination with a polarization-preserving screen and a single-lens stereoscopic 3D projector, the modulator enables high-brightness, low-ghost viewing using lightweight & comfortable passive 3D eyewear.

The new modulator can be pre-configured for either circular or linear polarization and is available in two sizes: Small, for projectors with apertures less than 2.75 inches (69.85mm), and Large, for projectors with apertures less than 7.12 inches (180.85mm).

The modulator utilizes a unique combination of separate liquid crystal elements bonded together, enabling both high polarization efficiency over visible wavelengths from 400 to 750 nm (predominantly achromatic spectral response) as well as fast transition switching speeds (<0.5ms at room temperature) between polarization states at frequencies such as 120Hz, 144 Hz (maximum 400Hz). Efficient, high-speed switching between the eyes ensures bright, low-crosstalk, flicker-free operation.

The system includes both the liquid-crystal modulator with its mounting and its control unit. A standard sync output from your graphics card or projector is supplied to the control unit, which then conditions the signal to match the modulator’s required input. The optical window is also heat-tolerant and can operate at temperatures up to 75 degrees Celsius.

NEW YORK, NY - May 3, 2010: Dimensional Communications, Inc., designer and producer of Mercedes-Benz' New York Auto Show exhibit (April 2010), tapped Lightspeed Design, Inc. to Executive Produce the HD 3D Stereoscopic film for this unique event marketing installation. The striking, fast-paced driving film was captured in 3D at 4K resolution and presented on both a large high-brightness rear-projection screen as well as multiple 3D monitors in a massive 88 x 158 ft open exhibit area, and was viewed using movie theater style polarized glasses.

Filmed on location near Santa Barbara, CA at the Sandpiper Golf Course, Bacara Resort and Cojo-Jalama Ranch, the 6 minute film features live 3D running footage of the Mercedes SLS AMG, E-Class Cabriolet and S400 Hybrid as well as pro golf played on a breathtaking oceanside course. The footage was shot on dual RED ONE™ cameras incorporated into Lightspeed's DepthQ® Stereoscopic rig, while the all-digital shoot utilized DepthQ®Capture™ Software, which provides real time monitoring, recording and playback of the stereoscopic imagery. Post production and editing at Lightspeed Design's studio added custom CGI, special effects, and incorporated Mercedes archival media.

The HD 3D film was displayed on a 16 foot wide by 9 foot tall rear-projection screen using two 30,000 lumen Christie Digital projectors, as well as on 4 passive horizontally interleaved 3D LCD monitors distributed throughout the exhibit space. Custom-branded Mercedes-Benz plastic circular polarized glasses gave guests a first-class 3D experience on both the large projection and the 3D monitors.

As Hollywood enjoys this latest wave of 3D filmmaking, I have long hoped that their innovations would eventually trickle down to benefit the independent filmmaking community. Noel Paul’s short film, Annie Goes Boating, which just had its world premiere here at SXSW, may be the film that proves indie directors are dying to get their hands on the technology. Gone are the flaming projectiles and the prickly protrusions that are commonly found in big budget 3D films. Instead, Noel gives us a gorgeous look at a day in the park.

I sat down with Noel to discuss how he was able to make this film on an indie budget. Once he realized he had access to two Red Digital Cinema cameras, the filmmaker went to work with his creative team to try to hack together a workable 3D rig. However, it wasn’t until he got in contact with Lightspeed Design, whose DepthQ technology is used in a number of 3D applications, that the pieces really began to come together. The result is a 10 minute short that is absolutely gorgeous.

400 Hz Polarization Rotator Comes to US

3D projector supplier Lightspeed Design (Bellevue, WA) and LC-Tec Displays AB (Borlänge, Sweden) have signed a new agreement that grants Lightspeed the exclusive rights to market and sell high-speed liquid crystal polarization rotator devices manufactured by LC-Tec Displays AB for stereoscopic 3D visualization products.

LC-Tec Displays developed a new type of liquid crystal polarization rotator that is capable of switching the polarization of a projected image at a speed of 400 Hz. Drive voltage is a 24V square wave. With the optional input polarizer, the system can produce two orthogonal polarizations output from unpolarized input light. One major application of the device is to be used with an unpolarized projector to produce 3D that can be viewed with either linear- or circular-polarized passive viewing glasses.

An engineering prototype of the new polarization rotator was demonstrated at the recent SIGGRAPH 2009.

Also launched at SIGGRAPH was a new high-brightness Lightspeed Design - InFocus DepthQ HDs3D stereoscopic projector. Ward said top level specifications for the new projector include:

• WXGA (1280 x 720/120p)
• 4K ANSI lumens
• 120 Hz page-flip S-3D
• Centered lens, two-axis lens shift
• VGA and HDMI input
• Keystone/pincushion/barrel distortion correction

Lightspeed Design (Bellevue, WA) has developed a flash technology for anaglyph delivery. In an email exchange with Chris Ward, the president of Lightspeed, we learned that this is not an ordinary red/blue or red/cyan mix but, rather, an improved mix that the company has been working on for about a year. Both the flash delivery container and anaglyph process are reported to be special. A video containing a demonstration of images presented in the new anaglyph mode is available online. BELLEVUE, WA – August 11, 2009: Lightspeed Design, Inc, USA and LC-Tec Displays AB, SWEDEN are pleased to announce today the signing of a new agreement that grants Lightspeed the exclusive rights to market & sell the high speed liquid crystal Polarization Rotator devices manufactured by LC-Tec Displays AB for stereoscopic 3D visualization products.

LC-Tec Displays AB has developed a new range of Polarization Rotators capable of switching the polarization of a projection-image at ultra-high speeds of 400Hz. The polarization rotator can be used together with a high-speed projector and polarization-preserving projection-screen in order to create high quality stereoscopic images using either linear or circular polarized passive viewing-glasses.

Products based on the Polarization Rotator will be commercially available from August 2009. Further details of the agreement are not disclosed.

INFOCUS® DEPTHQ® HD 3D PROJECTORS UTILIZED IN VR IMMERSION ROOM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA AT LAFAYETTE

LAFAYETTE, LA – July 31, 2009: Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and co-inventor of the CAVE™ Virtual Reality Environment, has incorporated three InFocus® DepthQ® HD 3D Projectors into her design of a new VR Immersion Room that she and her team of researchers built at the University of Louisiana for a collaboration with the Human Research and Engineering Directorate of the U.S. Army Research Lab.

The InFocus® DepthQ® Projectors create stereoscopic HD 3D video images on the walls of the three sided VR Immersion Room while an omni-directional treadmill, which serves as the floor, allows research subjects to travel non-stop in any direction through the virtual reality 3D world. The system was built to create software tools to enable studying the cognitive load on the dismounted soldier (on foot) in highly stressful, rapidly changing scenarios.

The goal is to determine what kind and how much information ground troops take in, what distracts them and how they choose which pieces to pay attention to in life and death situations. Dr. Cruz-Neira, and her team, developed the software architecture to create the scenarios in which the soldiers are immersed as well as to collect data from the soldiers through bio sensors and motion capture.

Dr. Cruz-Neira said “We were looking for technology that provides acceptable
resolution and image quality at literally one tenth the cost of previous designs. After our initial test and evaluation, we were pleasantly surprised by DepthQ’s performance and decided to design the overall system with these projectors. Eventually, we plan to add a fourth wall and additional projector to this system.”

DEPTHQ® HD 3D PROJECTOR UTILIZED IN UW BFA THESIS EXHIBITION

SEATTLE, WA - June 11-17, 2009: Mollie Fabric utilizes a DepthQ® HD 3D Projector to create her BFA Thesis Exhibition at the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media, University of Washington. Titled "Wolves and Drought", her installation explores spatial relationships and the representation of boundaries through the use of a nontraditional projection surface and the DepthQ stereoscopic HD 3D projector.

Mollie Fabric works in digital and traditional visual media. Throughout the process of building this piece she has found optimism and wry humor in the words of Paulo Coelho: "A shepherd always takes his chances with wolves and with drought, and that's what makes a shepherd's life exciting."

This Romanian group purchased two DepthQ® HD 3D projectors from Lightspeed's dealer, EDimesional, for small 3D theatres developed under their brand 3D-Experience CINEMA operating in two Romanian cities Craiova and Sibiu.

"In the first 3 months, the DepthQ projectors ran flawlessly for 8 hours each day showing 3D movies to more than 5000 people. Our Ministerial Department of Cinematography classified our theatres and the DepthQ HD-3D projectors as First Category after many tests."

Utilizing deep-ocean manned submersibles in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Washington State, principle 3D photography for Dive! was realized in late 2006 by stereoscopic filmmaker, Lightspeed Design of Bellevue, Washington.

In order to fit into the small, three-person submersible, Lightspeed custom-engineered an opto-mechanical dual camera rig for two Panasonic HVX-200 High Definition cameras. The advanced rig creates precise control of camera offsets, which is determined by 3D algorithms and Lightspeed’s proprietary live HD video streaming software. (www.DepthQ.com)

During the voyage two lost shipwrecks were discovered 1000 feet below the surface. Both were fishing vessels, one of Japanese origin and the other most likely American.

The ships were located by DeepSea Ventures ("DSV"), a deep ocean exploration company based in Spokane, Washington. The research vessel Valero IV - Seattle, and submersible experts Nuytco Research Ltd. of Vancouver, BC, supported the mission.

"Finding the fishing vessels was an incredible experience," said Guy Zajonc, DSV's founder and veteran deep diver. "With my sons, I've had the chance to visit famous wrecks like the Titanic and the Bismarck, but here was something truly undiscovered.

After successfully completing a ride-film for corporate client Continental Teves in 2003, Lightspeed was asked to provide a new 3D film for 2006 and also expand our creative responsibilities to include exhibit design for their mobile marketing project. Lightspeed mapped out a complete guest experience from entrance to exit that integrated advanced digital video technologies into clever, interactive exhibit pieces.

The mobile attraction consists of a themed entry, pre-show gallery, 3D motion theater, interactive displays, and a reality theater. Lightspeed designed all the exhibits and produced the video and stereo 3D. H.B Stubbs of Detroit provided the exhibit fabrication.

“We were pleased that Continental chose to expand our responsibilities by having us also design all the exhibits,” said Lightspeed President, Chris Ward. “Lightspeed crafted a complete visitor experience from front to back. Continental was very happy with the final product.”

“One of the most exciting parts of this project was the shoot at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway,” said Chris Ward. “We wanted first-person responses to Continental’s new safety technologies, so we rented the Speedway and let regular people put these cars through their paces on a NASCAR track. What a thrill for everyone.” The Speedway film shoot lasted 3 days, had a crew of 30, and used a Panasonic VariCam for capturing driver POV and also external shots from a crane. Lightspeed built a custom 3D video rig for capturing single-camera stereo footage.

“Creating the pepper’s ghost effect for one of the exhibits was a fun challenge,” said Bob Mueller, Lightspeed’s art director. “We were shooting a live person in such a way as to make him look only 6 inches tall. We also had to make it appear as though he was interacting with real props in the final display, so every inch of the set had to be carefully designed in pre-viz.”

Lightspeed again hired Karen Stanton, veteran film director, and Gary Payne, DP. “The Reality Theater had real people describing their own accidents or near misses. They then took test drives in cars outfitted with the new Continental safety technologies to try and recreate their mishaps. This made for some compelling content that will definitely connect with viewers,” said Karen.

Lightspeed Digital Film Brings GMC Truck Experience To Life
Lightspeed Design Group’s newest marketing film for GMC takes viewers places they’ve never been before with a realism rarely experienced in a marketing film.

GMC’s mobile theatre, now crisscrossing the country, combines state-of-the art motion simulator technology with cinematic high-definition video to put viewers in the driver’s seat of a 2006 GMC Sierra truck. The marketing film premiered in October at the Anaheim Auto Show and is now touring the country with ongoing appearances at ABC Monday Night Football games.

“This project challenged us to bring a heightened level of realism and cinematic photography to a ride film,” said Lightspeed President, Chris Ward. “We had to draw on our digital filmmaking experience and combine that with our technical know-how in motion control. Few companies are equipped to do that, but I think the quality of the film speaks for itself.”

Lightspeed’s devotion to the “Professional Grade” theme of GMC trucks saw the company employing a 20-person crew for the film’s three outdoor locations, a professional Hollywood stunt driver, and the latest high-definition video cameras.

“When you immerse the viewer in a big-screen ride film, you have to pay attention to the details,” said Bob Mueller, Lightspeed’s film director. For Lightspeed, that meant rigging a special isolation-dampening mechanism so the camera could capture the feel of riding the truck, pre-plotting the slalom-like movements of the Sierra using a 3D computer simulation, and painstakingly blending complex composites and computer-generated imagery with live-action video.

To make audiences realistically experience each tilt, turn and twist of the hard-charging Sierra, Lightspeed used a state-of-the-art six-axis digital accelerometer positioned along side the camera. The accelerometer’s digital data, which precisely measured every turn, twist and bump of the truck, was synchronized to video and used to control actuators that moved each viewer’s seat.

The result: audiences feel every bump and jolt as the truck dashes down a twisty forest service road, feel the world sink from under them as they plummet to the bottom of a rock quarry, and experience full-on acceleration as the truck chases a tornado across the Midwest.

Lowe Worldwide, an international advertising agency, came to Lightspeed with the project, which had to be completed in a breakneck eight-week production schedule. “Lightspeed’s technical savvy, unwavering commitment and professional attitude made this a terrific production,” said Josh Litwhiler, Lowe’s producer.

The GMC project marks the most recent marketing film created by the Bellevue, Wash., company, whose automotive clients include Mercedes-Benz and Continental Teves. Lightspeed’s film for Continental Teves combined specialized 3D digital stereoscopic techniques with projection technology pioneered by Lightspeed.

For a Mercedes-Benz exhibit at the Los Angeles and New York auto shows, Lightspeed’s filmmakers used the world’s most sophisticated motion control system to produce 3,500 high-resolution (4k each) stop-motion shots. A signature stylized effect was created when the imagery was displayed with Lightspeed’s digital media server technology, DepthQ, on to eight high-resolution plasma screens.

LIGHTSPEED COMPLETES 2005 MOTION SIMULATOR RIDE FILM FOR THE U.S. ARMY

This is the second film Lightspeed has produced for the Army, under the direction of Relay Sports and Event Marketing.

Lightspeed filmed simulator footage in a variety of locations. Stryker military transports were originally filmed at the US Army National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California. HUMVEE footage was filmed in Eldorado Canyon and the Lake Mead National Recreational Area, Nevada.

The new film will be paired with a four-seat portable motion simulator that is touring the U.S. at NASCAR, NHRA, and college events.

LIGHTSPEED COMPLETES HIGH-RESOLUTION DISPLAY FOR MERCEDES

Bellevue, WA 02/27/2005: Lightspeed Design Group (www.LightspeedDesign.com) announces the successful production and presentation of a unique, high-resolution display for Mercedes Benz at the Los Angeles Auto Show, January, 2005.

Exhibit designer, Dimensional Communications, Inc., of Northvale, NJ created an original display concept for their client, Mercedes Benz, to highlight four of their new car models. The display used two sets of four 60" plasma screens mounted vertically with Lightspeed’s digital media server technology, DepthQ, delivering a resolution of 1366 x 768 each.

The Production involved using a Mark Roberts Motion Control, Cyclops, the largest and most sophisticated motion control system available. Lightspeed shot 3,600 individual high-resolution (4K) stills using a “go-motion” technique which keeps the aperture of the camera open while the camera is being moved from key-frame to key-frame, creating realistic motion blur in the final 24 frame per second animation sequence. Lightspeed also created custom light-boxes using 120 8’ Kino-flow florescent lights.

This display will be featured again at the New York Auto Show, April 2005.

The ultra high-resolution display was driven by Lightspeed’s proprietary digital media playback software, DepthQ. DepthQ cost effectively delivers high-resolution media playback to theaters, museum exhibits, portable theaters, motion simulators, and corporate events. DepthQ is being used by some of the most image-conscious companies in the world, such as Disney Imagineering and Imax Corporation. LIGHTSPEED COMPLETES RIDE FILM FOR U.S. ARMY

Bellevue, WA February, 2004: Lightspeed Design Group today announced the successful completion of a 5½-minute motion simulator ride film, created for the U.S. Army's recruitment program, under the direction of Relay Sports and Event Marketing.

The new film premiered at the Daytona 500 where President Bush was in attendance and incorporated NASCAR, NHRA, and STRYKER vehicle footage. The Stryker was filmed on location at Ft. Irwin, US Army National Training Center in California.
